A buffalo burger is a type of hamburger made from ground buffalo meat, also known as bison meat. Buffalo meat is leaner than beef, with less fat and calories, but it is also a bit denser and has a slightly sweeter, richer flavor. Buffalo burgers are often considered a healthier alternative to beef burgers. They can be prepared and cooked in much the same way as traditional beef burgers, and can be served on a bun with toppings such as cheese, lettuce, and tomato. Some people find that buffalo burgers have a slightly gamey taste, but it’s usually milder than that of wild game meats like venison.

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground buffalo meat with a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix in any additional seasonings, if desired.
  2. Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty.
  3. Heat a skillet or grill to medium-high heat.
  4. Place the patties on the skillet or grill and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare, 4-5 minutes per side for medium, or 5-6 minutes per side for well-done.
  5. Once they are cooked to your preference, remove the patties from the heat and let them rest for a few minutes.
  6. Toast the buns if you want, add your toppings and enjoy!

Note: Since buffalo meat is leaner than beef, it can dry out more easily. To prevent this, be careful not to overcook the burgers and try not to press down on them while they’re cooking.

Buffalo burgers can be served with a variety of sides to complement their rich and slightly sweet flavor. Some popular options include:

  • Grilled or roasted vegetables: Try pairing your buffalo burger with grilled or roasted vegetables such as bell peppers, zucchini, or asparagus. These sides add a nice crunch and provide a healthy balance to the meal.
  • Potato or sweet potato fries: Classic fries are a great option to serve with buffalo burgers. You can also try sweet potato fries for a slightly sweet and healthier alternative.
  • Coleslaw: Coleslaw is a classic side dish that goes well with burgers, and adds a nice crunchy, creamy and tangy contrast to the rich buffalo meat.
  • Salad: A green salad is a great way to add some freshness and greens to your meal. A simple mixed greens salad with a vinaigrette dressing is a perfect choice.
  • Mac and Cheese: A creamy and cheesy mac and cheese is a great comfort food that complement well with the rich flavor of buffalo meat.
  • Baked beans : A side of baked beans is a great option to balance out the rich, slightly sweet flavor of buffalo burgers with a smoky and savory taste.

The best drinks to serve with buffalo burgers will depend on your personal taste and the seasonings or toppings you use on the burgers. Here are a few suggestions to consider:

  • Beer: A cold beer is a classic pairing for burgers, especially for buffalo burgers. The carbonation in the beer can help cut through the rich flavor of the meat. A malty beer like amber ale or brown ale can complement the sweetness of the buffalo meat, while a hoppy beer like an India Pale Ale (IPA) can balance the richness with a bitter finish.
  • Red Wine: A full-bodied red wine such as a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Syrah can complement the rich flavor of buffalo meat. The tannins in the wine will help cut through the fat and cleanse the palate between bites.
  • Bourbon: Bourbon is a whiskey that is made mostly from corn, it’s aged for at least 2 years in charred oak barrels which gives it a rich, smoky, and slightly sweet flavor that can complement buffalo burgers.
  • Lemonade or Iced Tea: If you are looking for a non-alcoholic option, lemonade or iced tea is a refreshing and easy to make drink that can complement the richness of buffalo burgers.
  • Water: Sometimes, the best drink with buffalo burgers, or any other food, is simply a glass of cold water. It can help to cleanse the palate and make sure you stay hydrated.

Ultimately, the best drink to serve with buffalo burgers is one that you and your guests enjoy. Feel free to experiment with different options and find the perfect pairing for your meal.
